"In every country there comes a time when patriotic men and women must stand up and speak out to protect their own individual rights and the overall health of the nation. In our country today, this is such a time. It is time for all people of good will to take a stand and plant a flag.
It’s for this reason that I have today established an Exploratory Committee to pursue the possibility of my running for the Presidency of the United States as a Republican in the 2020 election."

Bill Weld Announces Candidacy For President Of The United States of America
“It is time for patriotic women and men across our great nation to stand and plant a flag.”
Boston, MA (April 15, 2019) Today Governor Bill Weld announced his candidacy to run for President of the United States of America in the Republican Primary.
“Ours is a nation built on courage, resilience, and independence. In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their “win at all cost” battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering.
It is time for patriotic men and women across our great nation to stand and plant a flag. It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln – equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. I am ready to lead that fight,” said Weld.
In the months ahead Bill Weld will go directly to the American people to talk about their concerns, priorities, and dreams – both for themselves and for their children. He will share his vision of an America that lifts up all people, that unlocks the potential of every student, every small business owner, and every American worker.
A Reagan Republican who was appointed US Attorney by President Ronald Reagan, Bill Weld knows that America can still be that “shining city on a hill.”
Bill Weld believes that we must preserve the democratic institutions of our Republic: the rule of law, a free and open press, and America’s global leadership in maintaining a freer, safer world.
He believes that transparency is the cornerstone of accountability, that freedom dies in darkness, and that government must serve the people, not the politicians.
Bill Weld is uniquely qualified to serve the American people as President. He has an unblemished record of service and leadership. In addition to seven years in the Department of Justice, he served two terms as Governor in Massachusetts, where he was reelected by the largest margin in state history. He cut taxes 21 times, never raised them, balanced the budget, and oversaw six upgrades in the state’s bond rating. He signed landmark welfare reform, established public education standards, and was a trailblazer as an early proponent for LGBT civil rights.
He was ranked the most fiscally conservative Governor in the country by the Cato Institute and the Wall Street Journal.
Governor Weld was born in Smithtown, NY. He is a graduate of Harvard College summa cum laude, studied international economics at University College, Oxford, and received his law degree from Harvard Law School cum laude. Bill is an active member of the Council on Foreign Relations and of the InterAction Council, an organization of former heads of state who meet around the world and issue annual reports on international issues of transcendent importance such as nuclear proliferation, religious sectarianism, and food and water. Bill served by Presidential appointment on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.
He and his wife, Leslie, live in Canton, MA. Between them, they have eight children and eight grandchildren.

GOV. BILL WELD SUSPENDS CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT
March 18, 2020, BOSTON, Mass. — Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld released the following statement today announcing the suspension of his campaign for the Republican nomination for president.:
I hereby announce that I am suspending my candidacy for President of the United States, effective immediately.
I am immensely grateful to all the patriotic women and men who have stood with me during the past eleven months in our effort to bring better government to Washington, D.C.
Two years ago I became concerned enough about the future of this country to begin exploring the possibility of running for President. It is a job I feel certain I have the experience and vision to do.
Thousands of supporters and donors from across the country joined our cause, working day and night to promote strong, experienced, decent leadership for the United States. They were determined and indefatigable in their efforts to give Americans a better choice in the 2020 presidential election. Leading this movement has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I will be forever indebted to all who have played a part.
I have also absorbed a few lessons from this campaign and the opportunities it provided to listen to Americans from all walks of life, and am today more convinced than ever that we face imperatives which must be addressed by the national government:
The reason that people all over the world look to the United States for leadership, as they do, is our dedication to the rule of law under our Constitution. It is therefore of the highest importance that the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government, including the President of the United States and the U. S. Justice Department, observe the rule of law in all cases and do justice without fear or favor. Without that we will truly have lost our compass.
Federal budget deficits of over a trillion dollars per year are irresponsible. There is no such thing as “the Government’s money”: there is only taxpayers’ money.
The President should—I would say must—use his emergency powers to put a price per ton on carbon emitted into the atmosphere by coal companies, oil companies, and other major polluters, to prevent the melting of the north polar ice cap, which would have catastrophic environmental consequences for our entire planet, notably including the United States.
The President must strengthen our relationships with our military allies, who are force multipliers in the essential task of keeping the sea lanes and air lanes open for free trade among nations.
The Executive Branch, headed by the President, needs to issue many more immigrant work visas, in order to fully staff our agricultural, construction, and tourism industries.
Because of the damage that has been done to our social fabric during the past three years, in order to maintain national unity the U.S. Government must now directly address income inequality, by cutting taxes for lower income wage earners and families living below the federal poverty line.
While I am suspending my candidacy, I want to be clear that I am not suspending my commitment to our nation and to the democratic institutions that set us apart.
America is truly the greatest country on Earth. It’s up to each of us to ensure that it remains so.
